Hi all, I saw some basic oats in Tesco the other day and was wondering if they're any good for making beer with? Can you chuck oats in the ash or do you have to faff about with them first?

There has been some debate about this in the past but oats can be included in your recipe and can add to mouthfeel with a creamy oily texture. You don't want to add to much as the protiens can create a haze - I wouldn't go above 5% of total grain.

They're perfick in an oatmeal stout :drink:

Indeed, but to get the real benefit of the oats in oatmeal stout there is the dry roasting (SWMBO was not very happy as the house was stinking after I did it). However well worth the effort and if you fancy doing an Oatmeal stout then I think we know just the recipe. :thumb:

My local had a Wychwood oat ale as a guest beer, I don't think it was “Wild Oats”, maybe “Wild One”, or something like that.

First neckful was great and I thought I would have to brew some, I wasn't quite so sure by the end of the first pint and had gone off the idea completely by the end of the second.
