Tarmac cyclist

On the morning run today I had two cyclists on separate occasions and locations jump red lights. I'm starting to see a lot of this and it's only a matter of time before one of these numpties comes unstuck and get integrated in the tarmac.
Apart from causing danger to themselves or other road users, surely this is illegal, as it is if you do the same on a motorbike or in a car??

Yes it is they do have to comply to the highway code just like any other road user. Its a very emotive thing on this forum re cyclists so I am sure you may get some fruity remarks

Yeah I agree, and we still needs loads more done in the uk to improve cycling networks and use.

Why jump a red light why not get off walk over the crossing with your bike then get back on you'll be well ahead of the other traffic by the time the lights change.

Maybe if we just designate all footpaths as combined cyclepaths it would alleviate the problem.
At the moment there is some double standards going on, where some footpaths are regarded as cyclepaths, and some are not, and often cyclists have to switch between the two, and use pedestrian crossings to cross the road they are entitled to use anyway?

The problem with shared footpaths is some cyclists are courteous and some are morons (this also goes for drivers of all vehicles) pedestrians and cyclists sharing a footpath is in my view an accident waiting to happen.

Don't get me started on dog walkers with dogs on a 30 foot lead how is that classed as being under control?

I cycle 30 km a day on the Bristol to Bath shared Railway Path, in the Summer it's fine. In Winter, with people walking in dark clothes and golf umbrellas, it's a ******* hazard. I'm sure they'll be a day when a pedestrian forces me off the path or my bike.

In 2013 (I think) I remember police were stationed at busy central London crossings for a week or so handing out fines to cyclists who jumped red lights. This really improved the situation for a long time. It seems to be becoming more common though, but that's just from what I've seen.

EDIT: seems police did this again more recently (2018) https://www.standard.co.uk/news/tra...ce-in-twoweek-dangerous-driving-a4002276.html. 519 cyclists offences including jumping a red light.

I'd imagine that's an incredibly small proportion of London cyclists though.

I'm also an occasional cyclist but I hate the way cyclists ignore the Highway Code. Me and my grandson were nearly hit on a zebra crossing recently. I shouted at him but he took no notice.

It's never made sense to me that cyclists would want to ride on the busy streets along with cars but they do and it is completely legal here. They run the red lights as well. Staying on side streets was safe enough when I was a kid since the only thing going on at one time was one car passing one bike.
I was curious so I checked and there were 857 cyclist killed in motor vehicle crashes in the US in 2018. That's kind of a lot.

I cycle every day using a mixture of roads and cyclepaths, and don't jump red lights. I'm afraid that there are plenty of idiots on the roads on foot , on bikes and in motor vehicles. We all need to be sensible and safe, no one wants to be an injury or death statistic

A cyclist hits a pedestrian, both might come away with a bruise or 2, a vehicle hits a pedestrian and it's more likely the cyclist gets killed and the driver goes away with PTSD. I've cycled through busy city streets for 10 years and had a few close calls. It's usually down to drivers on their phones as well.

On the same stretch of road I often see cars & vans pulling left into the bus and cycle lane (without looking or indicating) to avoid stopping for the red light in the other lanes. When numpty meets numpty on the road it's bound to not end well. On the plus side this roundabout is the junction to Trelisike hospital in Truro, so at least the emergency services don't have to waste too much fuel getting to them.

I guess cyclists are using that time lag between one set of lights going to red and the one they're on going to green in order to get across before some idiot in a car wipes them out from behind. A risky strategy at best. Worse than traffic lights for me in my cycling days was attempting a big roundabout on a major road with cars coming at you at 40+ while you're trying to get all the way round to take the third exit.

This could stop the problem, by making it legal. You'd still get idiots going before the green though I bet.

I cycle to work most days, 4 miles each way. I don't jump red lights, but then most of the way is on shared footpaths rather than the road. That said, I've been knocked off my bike and forced off the road once each by cars in the last couple of years. It takes no time to pass a cyclist with care, but a lot of drivers are oblivious.
