I have a pack of Target Hops @ 9%AA just sitting there. Has anyone used them before? I was tempted to do a single hop beer but cant find any examples so assume its not such a good idea?!

Thanks :thumb:

It doesn't seem to get talked about too much. I am not entirely sure why I purchased it...

I use target as the base of most of my beers for bittering. You will find that a lot of commercial beers use it hence why most GW recipes include it. It has a high AA so it is obviously commercially viable for big breweries.

However it can be a thug if over used and I would never use it for aroma it is a bittering hop not a dual purpose hop. I once did a pale ale with it in the bittering but over did it a bit, wasn't nice at first but did mellow with time. I usually use it with challenger or northdown in the bittering.

I'm a fan of Target hops, some rubbish them as cheap copper hops but I think they're great at 100% in dark ales with EKG for dry hopping in the cask!!

I think it's like any high alpha bittering hop, easy to overdose. I once ruined some pale bitter adding ~35 IBU of Target at the beginning, beer got catty flavour and very sharp bitterness. Didn't get better in 8 weeks so I put it in thermic enricher.

But it went fine when mixed with Challenger, that's my favourite combo for bittering.

I have used them before... and as many above point out they are a bit tricky to use... as a home brewer we tend not to penny pinch too much; so i would tend to use hops that have a robust bitterness but not harsh.

Anyway many use them with good results so its a matter of preference. :thumb:

Well they are in the freezer at -5c so untill the stocks run really low they will prob stay there. If I get a week off maybe I'll do a 100% brew as IMO thats the only way to get a proper hop profile.

Thanks for the feedback. I think that really the APA hops have taken over alot of the 'craft' brewing scene. There is alot to be said, tasted and drunk in the standard bitter part of the market.

Target is not written off :thumb:
