do you degas before taking hydometer readings

No -You cannot degas until fermentation is finished and the only way to know that for sure is taking a hydrometer reading.

Sorry i dont think i was clear enough - syphon off some of the brew into a trial jar to take a reading, at this point would you give the stuff in the trail jar a shake to remove some of the CO2?

I guess the question i should be asking is does CO2 effect hydrometer readings?

Its a good point, i have often read you should spin the hydrometer when you first put it into the trial jar to get rid of any bubbles that may stick to it and give a false reading but i have never read about CO2 in the wine doing the same.

I usually plunge the hydrometer up and down several times to degas the sample. I find you get a higher reading if you don't degas.

Hi all,

do you degas before taking hydometer readings? Thinking that the CO2 would cause a wrong reading due to sticking to the tube?

Spin the hydrometer in the liquid and any air or CO2 bubbles should be centrifuged away.

Your higher reading is from the hydrometer being floated by adhering gas bubbles, so spinning it should work just as well.
