That 2 litre demi john prob wont take any pressure. Use with care!

I was reading the top of the post and thought - ah flensburger bottles are ideal. And someone already posted it! I bought 60 bottles of these in their crates when in Germany last Summer (my wife is German). THere were only like 15 euros for 20 bottles including deposits. Beer is SO cheap in Germany. And i got 3 free glasses as it was 100th (?) anniversary. they are super thick and take quite a pressure - I love the PLOP they make when you open them. Only problem is that the rubber seal isn't replaceable (its stuck onto the ceramic lid) - seems to last a while though..... Thoroughly recommended!

I like swing top bottles but I can't justify spending near enough £40 on a single brew length, that's a hell of alot of bottle caps.

I'll keep buying 3 bottles of heinekin every time I go in to asda though.. Which probably works out more expensive

As well as using the 500ml German swing tops I'm building up a supply of 330s from Hercules, Belgian stouts that my wife loves.

@chrig -the swing tops can be used umpteen times though, so that £40 will be spread over many batches. I have 8 boxes of the Range swing top bottles, so two 23L batches, and I've probably used each bottle+swing top about 20 times so far with no problems. I am careful with the swing tops though, separating them from the bottles for sterilisation, and and only sterilising them for the minimum time so as not to chemically degrade the seals prematurely.

Unfortunately the Range swing-tops aren't the best in terms of what happens when the orange seal does start to degrade as it's not removable, so the whole swing top assembly has to be replaced rather that just the seal. Still, they have proven to be remarkably resilient so far and are still looking good as new after nearly 2 years.

I have a fair few Flensburger bottles from German friends :)
It is pretty expensive here though if you find it.

£2.75 a bottle in my local Wetherspoons.

Edit: just realised this thread is 5 years old!

Yes, I've seen them for sale, and that's the solution if the swing tops allow it. Unfortunately the Range swing tops have been made so the seals are inseparable from the white plastic bit. It's hard to work out exactly how they've done that, but even with pliers I haven't been able remove the seal, only to rip off little chunks of it and end up damaging the white bit.
