Supermarket Sterilizer

Hi,

Is there anything I can get from a supermarket that I can use for sterilizer. I ordered some online but it hasn't shown up yet and im desperately needing to take some readings and do some bottling today?

Milton fluid/tablets. Thin bleach - diluted. The bleach needs rinsing off whatever you use it on. Some people say that they dont rinse off the milton as it's supposed to be no rinse but it's bleach based, so I did when I used to use it

I've never really used thin bleach for sanising. I've only ever used it to nuke an FV when I thought I had infection in there. It's really cheap though (about 17p for 2L). He's a discussion from HBT on dilution rates.
There is some stuff on the forum somewhere about mixing it with vinigar to make a no rinse solution (dont try this btw without knowing exactly what your doing as you can make some sort of dangerous chemical gas if you mix them wrongly)

I use Milton tablets and have for a couple of years, two to a washing up bowl of water and it only takes 15 minutes to do its thing you also do not need to rinse.

I use Milton tablets and give a quick rinse afterwards, but it's fairly odourless

I've not used for beer gear, but I use steradent tablets for cleaning inside hard to reach inside stuff like my coffee flask.

I've only ever used El Cheapo bleach for sterilizing... at a rate of 4 capfuls per 5 gallons, followed by a couple of rinses with water as hot as my domestic boiler can deliver it. As I've oft said, no infections ever since oh I dunno, Tubeway Army or summat first made the charts. There really is no need whatsoever for 'specialist' (ie rip-off ) products unless there's some pressing need to save a few minutes.

I agree, there is no need for specialist products per se but I do love the convenience and ease of star san, though. Plus you can re-use it. I've had my bottle of undiluted star san for about 4-5 years now and it's still about a 1/5th full. So it really does make it quite cheap (bar the initial cost of course). If this wasnt the case I'd be using thin bleach too. Just fyi you can make a no-rinse solution using bleach as a particular dilution (I'd have to look around t'interwebs to find out what exactly it is though)

I use the Milton tablets and don’t rinse. Nice and convenient and no infections yet [emoji106]

The cheapest unperfumed thin bleach you can find (Morrison's do 2l for 28p) works fine and I use this and a squirt of washing up liquid to clean, sterilise and degrease my bottles before bottling a brew. A quick rinse and you're good to go.
