Not a correction, but I've never had a problem with mineral water, straight out of a fresh bottle.

Well what else are you meant to do with it if you want the 5 litre bottle for a fermenter?
Chuck it down the sink? Seems wasteful to me.
Drink it neat?

Cheers Guys

I have a few DJ's that need topping up so it makes sense to buy a 5l bottle, the remaining water can be used for another gallon of juice wine...winner! :D

Suitably impressed with my Wurzel's original and a red grape version, I got carried away at Morissons today. Was planning on waiting for a Tesco visit but couldn't help myself. My newly acquired dj's were looking sad.

1 Wurzel's
1 Apple and white grape
1 Pineapple, apple and white grape
1 Strawberry Ribena and cranberry

All bubbling away nicely.

Next time I drop by Tesco I'll be keeping my 5 gallon fermenters in mind.

That was fast. The pineapple, apple and white grape is in bottles and I'm enjoying one as I type. Fermentation was pretty much done in two weeks and within two days of racking was crystal clear, with a little sediment.

I put the last of the DJ into a 2 litre scrumpy bottle but made a bit of an **** of it by stirring up the sediment. It looks fine now but has a little bit of sediment at the bottom. Is this likely to be much of an issue beyond aesthetics?

If you were planning on keeping any for more than a couple of months I would re-rack, but I get the impression that it's not going to last long enough for it to be a problem.

can you store the bottle upside down, :?:
the sediment will settle into the lid,
then when ready crack it open it over a sink, and the settled sediment will be pushed out
i do all my beers and lager like this...

Hmmm, it's a two litre scrumpy bottle with a cork in it, I get the feeling a fair bit of it may end up in the sink but I'll store it upside down and see if I'm feeling brave.

Sorry to disagree artyb, I would store it right ways up and then decant or pour it slowly and carefully,

this inverted storing works well for me using 2l pet bottles,
when cracked open upside down over a sink, most of the yeast sediment passes out,
then if its tipped upright and cracked open slowley again the bubbles push any dregs on the side of the bottle out..resulting in sediment free beer.....

very little beer is wasted... :thumb:

I know the principle, it's called degustation and is used in sparkling wines in the methode champenoise, but I've never tried it.

Ok, you've convinced me, I've still got a few bottles of last year's sparkling elderflower which have a bottle sediment, so I'm going to gently dislodge the sediment and stand them upside down.

I'll let you know how it goes :thumb:

Moley I think you will find degustation means tasting? Literally 'taking a small amount into the mouth to test its quality'

After a trip 2 Asda found they have 1lts of Dom Simon 100% juices not from concentrate at 2 for £1.50.
So have come back with 3 sets of 2 for 3 separate gallons.
Coupled with sugar from farmfoods @ 2 for £1, I think they are worth trying.
They are
red grape 60% strawberry puree 20% orange 20%
grape 45% orange 25% pineapple 15% mango 10% passion fruit 5%
red grape 70% apple 20% raspberry 10%
I’m a bit pensive about the 2nd set.
Problem is that they only say carbohydrates not sugars, how do I work out the sugar content?

Now that I've collected in the experimental data I can say that neither of us really cared about the little bit of sediment in the last two glasses of the 2 litre bottle - in fact we were speculating if it may have been the nicer than the previous glasses.... Will keep the upside down tip in mind and give it a shot sometime.

That Dom Simon stuff should be good, I picked up 2 litres and woke up to find my daughter enjoying it with a bowl of coco pops - tasted damn good straight from the carton, will pick up more soon and put it well out of reach this time.

To avoid a similar incident I have started the three batches this morning.
Although the wife has now started to complain about the smell from the spare room when she saw me putting another three demies in. I think i need to start thinking how to set up an insulated area in my garage!
