I was in the best real ale pub in Dunfermline last night and had a couple of pints. The first was Brakspear and the second was Beacon Ale. Both were okay but has a slight sulpher tinge to them.

What could cause this? Would it be the strain of yeast or something to do with minging beer line?

I'd say it was to do with the water. Gypsum gives off a very distinct sulphur smell. You get it in Marston's beer for sure. :?

Brakspears yeast is known for its sulphur production . . . . IIRC WLP023??? but don't quote me on that ;)

Buzz's comment about Marston's i can vouch for...

the pub literally next door to work sell Pedigree, and on the odd occasion it has a sulfurous smell... and i stress "occasionally". i've not yet figured out why but every week on a friday lunch time when i've drunk it, it's tasted different. so i'm putting it down to the cellarman personally in this case... unless Marston's QA bloke is drinking the stuff while on the job  :drink:

I will
I found my 023 starter had a really pronounced sulphur smell, however the beer made with it did not.
My second 023 batch is fermenting and the same smell is not present.
