Right, my fermenting vessel & plastic bottles have arrived, so I need to get myself a beer kit. The trouble is, Mrs M and I have quite different tastes. She generally likes weak & hoppy (think Breakspear) where I prefer something stronger, darker and malty (Belgian, barley wine). We both enjoy a stout or porter, so some common ground.

So, any suggestions for a kit to make that might please us both?

i did a wilkos velvet stout that was quite nice. its a 1.5kg tin but wilko have got them a half price sale on so might be worth a look online or in store

You`re both at the opposite ends of the scale. If you brew something in between then you`re both going to be disappointed. Brew the beer that you want first (sorry wifey) and then brew a beer to suit her tastes. But thinking about this.....brew her beer first, this will give you a good excuse to brew another beer

You said you both like Porter.

The Ritchies Festival London Porter is one of three or four kits I would consider making again. It is simply excellent.

The old wifey conundrum!!!
The present Mrs KC thought all this home brewing lark was a load of old pony when i started, it wasn't long though until she wanted to know if there would be anything "going in one of them buckets" for her.
As we stand all four of my FVs are either full of "her stuff" or being cleaned after being full of "her stuff" and she has worked her way through 25 litres of white WOW (another batch clearing as we speak/type), and four different flavoured TCs (three more on the go).
I aren't complaining of course, as she now leaves me free to brew as i please.
Brew for yourself then set something going for the little lady would be my advice, wherry is good, i like the wilko golden ale (lighter but full of hoppy aroma) and the wilko and coopers stout are both very good. :thumb:

Belgians: Brewferm

I've only done the Abdij so far, dark Abbey/trappist style, but very impressed, even if the FG is higher than Brewferm say. I know the rest of the range is popular too. Best to get something quicker first though, as they want a long time in the bottle.

Brew what you want first. Tell swmbo that you're doing it the first time ever, and as such, when you brew something for her, you want it to be perfect.
