How much sugar should I be using per bottle?
Just had a batch of bottles that randomly exploded when opened. I was making up a sugar solution of 5g per bottle and adding to an 2nd fv mixed with beer before bottling.
Thanks
F

Depends on the kind of sugar you're using and the size of bottle, but 5g a bottle is a lot either way. 2.5 - 3g would be more like it (or a teaspoon in a 500g bottle for a pale ale, half that for a stout). At 5g you're lucky you didn't have bottles explode before they were opened...

Best bet is to use a online beer primmer calculator. I use the brewers friend one.

A priming sugar calculator is highly recommended. The Brewer's Friend one is good and works well for me. The temperature to use in the calculator is the highest temperature your beer reached at the end of/after active fermentation.

I use granulated sugar dissolved in water then added to fv before bottling.

For the ones that I have done I just use two carb drops per bottle. This works well and is nice and clean. However, as time goes on I may just use the cheaper sugar option. For most this gave a nice amount of fizz apart from the cider that I tried. These was not enough in there, so next time I may do three.

Reading the posts above I didn't realise that I would need to put less in for English Bitter but thinking about it yep it is right. When I get back to the UK I will be doing one and do not want it too fizzy.
