So, all grain brew no.5 needs to be a tasty belter! I planned to go all Amarillo as I've got the hops already to use up. And we've just been asked to get involved with a street party where we live, which basically means make and take beer Pete! I have done an amarillo pale before and it was pretty much a SmAsH with just maris otter pale. For this one I'd like to add a few more grains to make it a bit more interesting.

MarkMayf gave me the following recipe for an all Amarillo pale..

5kg Maris Otter
(250g Carapils)*
54g of hop at boil
27g at 55 minutes
27g at 65 minutes
83g at end of boil. (I added when temp was below 80)

Can anyone advise me on additional grains with possibily the *carapils out of the equation. I do have a few bags left over from previous brews...

Munich - 380g approx
Crystal Malt (120-140) - 370 g approx
Caramalt - 160g approx

Cheers

That sounds great with or without the carapils

It won't be too in your face for lager drinkers?

Should come out at about 65 IBUs if I'm reading the recipe correctly.

I got 62 IBUs, but it's almost 1.17 on the bu:gu scale. An APA is normally about 0.8ish, that is pretty bitter for most people's tastes. So you could drop a few IBUs or up the strength.... For a street party, the former is the better idea. I only know about this as I was reading up on it just last night in bed.

Just put these into brewers friend but seems way up in the IBUs. (97) . Think there's something amiss with these figures maybe..

That grain bill should give you a gravity up around 1.052, so to get a correct balance on the bu:gu scale, you want to aim for around low to mid 40s on the IBUs.

Is a >5% beer what you want for a session beer?

First time I've adjusted a recipe so bare with me but yes, completely agree. Don't want to provide a hop bomb for those delicate lager/wine consumers. Or a beefy 5% + either. Bringing down the initial boil hop and the grain bill. More like an OG now of 1043, ABV of 4.5 and IBU of 43.
Sound good?

Thats a BU:GU rating of 1, which is still 'apparently' too high for the style, but sounds ok to me.
