When it comes to straining a fruit wine (blackerry in this case), is it acceptable/good enough to put it through a plastic flour sieve, or does it really need to go through something finer? Someone once told me they used stockings

I use a nylon flour sieve, followed by a fine mesh nylon straining bag. You could use an old pillowcase, piece of sheet, tea-towel or anything similar. I also use muslin straining bags from my LHBS, 15p each, use 'em once and chuck 'em away. I've never tried stockings or tights. Whatever you use, give it a good long soak in sulphite first.
