i have been conditioning and storing all the brews i have made so far in the bedroom. after reading when they have been at fermenting temps for a week or 2 to put them somewhere cooler. so i have got the timber to put more shelving around the shed to mature dj's of wine etc on aswell as keeping bottles once conditioned which will help as im running out of space storing them inside. at the minute i cant see a problem with temperatures and although the shed roof is insulated it does drop quite cold in there, i havent gone through summer yet since its been insulated so i have to presume its going to be really warm in the summer which i dont think will be good for the bottles and dj's. any ideas or will they be ok? thanks

The trouble with sheds is that the temperatures vary so much over the year, from below freezing to well above 30C. and that is something beer doesn't like.
But we have to use what space is available to us.
Cool or cold periods are not too problematic, some kind of heat can be applied ( if electric supplied to the shed a tubular heater is great, if not a greenhouse parafin heater lit when needed )
Hot spells are the problem as its quite hard to remove the heat !
Ingenuity is required ! If security allows leave a window/door open when you can. Damp towels etc etc.

A shed is not ideal for storing beers, but like I said we have to use what we have available....Good luck

i have electric out in the shed and over winter without heating it dropped to freezing and not below. i had a barrel of wherry out there through christmas and tasted brilliant it is just the summer im worried about. the shed has all my tools in aswell as £1000's in bikes so leaving it undone isnt really an option. even with the cctv and lights i wouldnt be able to sleep at night. i have an extractor fan installed but i dont think that would be sufficient at pulling the heat out. maybe there are small a/c units i could run from a small solar panel.

the shed is vented and also have an extractor fan which may help keep it cooler as the prices of a small aircon unit is quite alot. im not sure on the running cost of an extracor fan running constantly throughout the day every day, any ideas what would be needed to set the fan up to use a small solar panel? thanks

lol  ive been sat thinking and going to use a room thermostat which can be wired for cooling and try with 1 or maybe 2 extractor fans along with the vents may be ok, if that doesnt work ill look into the other options then. for now i can crack on with the shelves and also sort another wardrobe for the bedroom to install shelves for more fermenting room and somewhere to keep the boiler and chiller tidied away. the fermenting cabinet i already have only fits 8 djs and struggling now im getting more into brewing lol.

Can you put a cheap fridge (from eBay or freecycle) in there connected to an STC1000 or similar?

I'll have the same issue with my steel garage, it's gets warm in summer so will have to get a cool place in the house or pick up a cheap fridge from somewhere!

i was thinking about a fridge but for what i have on the go and bottles at the minute would fill a few fridges plus im starting more pretty much weekly and about to do my first ag so will be plenty of those to be added.

Just an idea , prob no good but how about insulating the shed with foil lining the inside with a few fridges running with doors open , would that cool the shed as a big fridge but most likely burn out the fridges motors :hmm:

To get any kind of usable cooling in a garage/shed you will need an aircon unit im sorry to say.

Once purchased though you'll have it for life so long as you service it and clean it thoroughly with disinfrctant spray.

Or you could hire one for the 4 weeks or so that we get warm weather, i don't think they're too expensive

As long as the backs of the fridges were outside, it might work. Wouldn't like to see the electricity bill though. Plus, each fridge could draw 10A so you'd need a thick cable feeding the shed.

got cracking with the shelves in the shed today and moved most of my brews out there just another 8 gallon or so fermenting in the house now along with all the empties. when the new shed comes for the bikes will be adding another 3 rows of shelves to each side so i can put more out there.

only been brewing 4 months and getting a collection going lol. trouble is theres always something in the shop or on the forum i want to make or use for a brew. i scrounge all the timber so that wasnt bad and going to knock crates up for the ag brews once the first is started. ive got a big collection of empty wine bottles from an alky over the road and just getting enough beer bottles for my 1st ag brew.

it will be better when we get the other shed to free up the room. will have loads of shelf storeage for brews with a stand built for my boiler to go on. already wired a 20 amp supply out there and will plumb water in and poss a sink when brewing out there. waiting for a cheap wardrobe or one on freecycle to setup next to the fermenting cupboard to rack with shelves and insulate as another fermenting place and to keep boiler and fermenting vessels in.
