I know its a bit late for this year, but what is the best way to store apples for eating?
Is it to just wrap them individually in newspaper and keep them cool and dry?
Her indoors won't let me make cider with them!

Aye, wrap them in newspaper and put them in a box or something but make sure they don't touch. Then just keep them cool and dry.

Sorry to hear SWMBO won't allow you to make cider.
Perhaps you could try a more clandestine approach   .

I once worked with a guy who had been a cook in the merchant navy. When they were on a long voyage on a 'dry ship' they would take potatoes hollow them out a bit an fill with a bit of bakers yeast, then the potatoes were strategically hidden around the ship and allowed to ferment. Then when you fancied a tipple you drank from a potato. A bit extreme I know but still simple

to answer you original question i have just found this at telegraph.co.uk credit to Bunny Guinness

Only store perfect fruit and handle with kid gloves. The room where you store your apples should have a low, even temperature, good ventilation and a moist atmosphere. Cellars are better than attics, where temperatures vary and the atmosphere is dryer.

If you don't have such a space, wrap them in newspaper, put them in boxes, stack them on the north side of a building under some insulation (for example straw, or Polystyrene sheets), and cover with polythene. It helps to wrap dessert apples in newspaper as it slows the shrivelling process and isolates rots.

Hope it is of help
