Whilst being unable to brew I've been thinking about tinkering in the brewshed. And 1 major thing that may help is the boiler lid.
Normally whilst cooling or doing a f/o steep I don't use the lid as the I/c is in the way. I'm thinking of cutting 2 small notches in the edge of the lid so I can try and keep infection to a minimum.

The reason being with my last batch I lost it due to infection and think it could of been 1 of a few things. It was a fairly hot day so kept opening the shed door, I turned the cooker hood off at f/o instead of after draining into fv so a few drops went in the boiler whilst cooling. Then I had the boiler open whilst steeping the hops and throughout the slightly longer cooling period due to water temps.

So thinking this might be a wisemove , anyone done similar?

That's the only thing really holding me back, although its more on the best way and neatest for the cut outs.
I can't see me going bigger than a 50l boiler so won't be selling soon, there's only me in the house that drinks so regularish 23l brews are plenty.

Foil? Get a big catering roll and cover the top whilst your cooling, if your being cheap a spray of star San and it could be used again and again

Feel a right **** now, didn't even think of foil  Im still going to use the lid though, thinking if qmax cutters will work at the edge of the lid as its not flat.

cut out a large circle of 9mm plywood to rest on top of your pot.

I didn't see any but could well have been whilst I wasn't watching. It didn't smell or taste of vinegar either.

one build ive seen in here or somewhere similar has an IC built into the pot lid using tank connectors,

for the last 15mins the lid is on with the coil off centre to sanitise and allow steam an exit, when cooling the lids on proper and keeps any nasties off the beer,

Had thought of doing it like that fil but not tried splitting soldered joints before, so don't no how easy it would be.
