Hi All,

As some of you will know I want to upgrade my kit. I'm looking at doing both 5g and 10g batches.

Now I'm wondering what size thermobox to get hold of. Will a 50l be ok for 10g of 5.5% beer? I fly sparge by the way.

I was going to go for 75l stockpots to give me enough leeway.

May even use a 50l thermo for the HLT instead of a stockpot, it'll save me some electricity.

my 100L stock pot can only realistically *just* cope with an 85L (18.6gals)

you'll probably scrape about 9 gallons in the 50L stock pot

if your 5gal kit is still functional why not just go the 100L route and use it for 10, 15 and 18.6 (about the limit for 100L boilers) batches, and use your 5 gal brewery for the smaller batches ;)... it's what i do :thumb:

Is it just me, or is 85L of beer rather a lot?

I'm not sure I'd want that amount of the same beer :hmm:

Guess it means you're likely to leave the last couple of cornies to reach their peak :?:

it's just you

if you are sensible and only drink 2 pints a day on weekdays, maybe 10 over the weekend, that's 20 pints a week, that's only 8 weeks worth for one person :!:

i did 85L of rauchbier at the end of november.. bottled half and cornied the other half, i'm all out of cornies, and only got about 40 bottles left (10 ish days worth as swmbo will no doubt swipe some) and that's with drinking 2 kegs of TC, a keg of stout and a half keg of another beer too... so it doesn't last that long ;)

this was the first beer that ever made it to maturation for me

i had the same thoughts about how long it would take to drink it, so that's why i bottled half cos it seems to hold it's flavour alot longer in the bottle.

mind you i've got a new years resolution to have a stock of 500 pints (even if it's for just one split second ) this year so dont take my advice

Just re-read what I wrote.

I meant a 75l thermo for the HLT. Or maybe not.

I'm thinking a 50l thermo for the mash tun and two 75l stockpots for the HLT and boiler respectively.

NO have just asked me what I'm after so it's possible that they have some and aren't telling anyone.

A little bird (ok, I don't actually know how big Nadine is) has told me that they've got 70l stockpots for 49.5 euro each.

Damn the bloody strength of the pound. Still, can't complain at that price.

No thermoboxes as yet though.

Thanks for the update. I'm thinking of upgrading my boiler & mash tun at some point. My rectangular coolbox suffers from cold spots near the corners which I think is why I'm getting dubious/ever changing efficiencies.

And I just don't feel safe around my plastic boiler - especially moving it full of hot wort. I think I need a boiler on casters ;)

i've enquired as to when the 12L thermoboxes will be in (for my atto brewery) and been told yesterday they should be in stock in two weeks. i dont know if that's the case for the bigger ones too, but that's the best tip i can give ;)

2 70l stockpots are now winging their way over the channel to me

Busy weekend now, plumbing and wiring.

Let's hope the thermoboxes come in soon.

Very reasonable indeed. I was going to upgrade my mash tun first but if the thermoboxes aren't coming in for a while - maybe I'll do the boiler & hlt :hmm:

I need a new boiler and HLT more than I need a mash tun so I don't mind waiting. Can still do my 5g batches with it.

Won't have to worry about my guaranteed boilover anymore.

Are you going to be running the boiler on electric?

I'm wary of messing up the cutting of the holes if I go down that route.

Yep, electric.

Haven't quite decided whether I'm going to the kettle element route, or a domestic immersion or a burco element yet.

Use the Q max hole puncher, it's fool proof. I know cause i cut all the holes in my pots with them

Thanks - I'd forgotten about the Q-Max cutters - I just need to save up some pennies now :D
