Is it ok to gently shake fermentation bin just to encourage the co2 inside the fermentation bin. I currently have a nice head inside the fermentation bin will this head dissapear when fermentation has stopped? Beer has been in primary for 2 days now. I don't use an airlock just crack the lid open ever so slightly at one side its hard not having a sneaky peak inside akthough you shouldn't.

I tend to just leave it although a lot of people rouse[stir]. If you do make sure whatever you rouse with is sterilised. Don`t worry about opening the lid, some brewers ferment in open FV`s

You want to avoid introducing oxygen into the wort once the yeast has been pitched as it will negatively affect the taste of the beer. That head will eventually fall back into the brew and that's normal. You'll want to use a hydrometer to make sure fermentation has stopped before bottling or you might end up with bottle bombs. Hope this helps!

Hi

If you need to use a hydrometer to test the brew to see if it's ready, how do you do so without oxygen entering the brew?

I am new to all this.

Cheers

I always use a sanitised turkey baster and trial jar. Draw out the beer and squirt into jar.

The good thing about this is you can have a taste after you've taken the reading to see how things are going.

So, to stir or not to stir? My fermentation is stuck at 1.020 91020, not sure whether to add more yeast, or stir, or shove it in the barrel.

:thumb: Easiest way of doing it...

You say to stir or not to stir...give it a go your not going to harm anything...what's the temp??..if you wake the little buggers up so be it..if it has finished it'll settle in a few days ..check your readings ..then you can bang it into bottle/keg...job done..get on with the next one...
