You will have seen the fancy cigar box stir plates in the how to forum, here is the cheap and cheerful version -

A PC Power Supply, magnet, stir bar and and a couple of bits of wood, sorted.

Those power supplies build up a huge amount of current (i.e. A LETHAL amount). I definitely wouldn't advise putting a container of water directly above the fan hole. Just condensation or splashed water drops could short it out, a spillage could be major!
