Steriliser question (possibly made a mistake)

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and just started my very first home brew yesterday, using a kit from Youngs. I followed all the instructions and it went well (I hope), however I woke up this morning with the thought that I might have made a mistake. And I have no idea whether it's a serious mistake or not, so I just wanted to ask.

The jug I used to empty the steriliser solution out of the FV (1 lire pyrex jug) was the same jug I used to add the first three litres of boiled water for the actual brew, and I'm not 100% sure that I definitely rinsed it out before using it, so it may have had some steriliser residue on it. The steriliser I used was the Youngs Steriliser, and it's a 23 litre/40 pint kit.

If I did do that, does anyone know if that's going to be a problem? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I might just be being paranoid, but this is all new to me. :-)

no such thing as a stupid question matey. you should be ok, and TBH there`s not a lot you can do now, so just wait and see.

Should be fine Jacks, dilution would give lower concentration of chemical than is probably in your tap water.

I think the youngs steriliser is no rinse so it should be fine, this may be helpful for future ref

The steriliser instructions do say to rinse everything after, but perhaps that's just to be extra sure.

So worst case scenario, if it does do anything, it might just give the beer a funny taste or something? Such a small quantity of the chemicals isn't going to be bad for you?

Other folks have done the same thing and not reported any problems, as you say such a small amount should not be noticeable.

I did (almost) the opposite at the weekend. I forgot I hadn't sterilised my bottle tree until after I had dried and filled 45 bottles! Hoping no bacteria made its way into my bottles!

Any residue left on the side of the jug, diluted in 5 gallons of sugary wort won't make any difference.
I'd go as far as to say that the first jug full of hot water. would have diluted the residue so much that even then there would be little impact.
Bear in mind that mothers use this stuff regularly on babies bottles.
