I was surprised to see how old he was as I thought he was much younger also that he was not given long to live when they found he had a rare version of MN.

Certainly a loss, but hav to disagree with his passion of string theory, it's the dam donuts - millions of them - think he spent to much time around Homer in the Simpson's.

I thought he was alright until he started banging on about climate change, then BANG! - all credibility gone down a black hole.

I read it in bed where no one could see me looking totally confused.
There's a simplified edition called A Briefer History of Time which is a fantastic read for the simple average Joes like myself. It's still head-melting in places, particularly the time travel chapter.

I loved it, the how far a ping pong ball bounces on a train example showing the concept of relativity

Is that the one where if you were on a ( hypothetical ) train travelling at close to the speed of light and you fired a gun in the direction of travel, would the bullet exceed the speed of light? Or was it that other brainy dude Einstein? Dunno, sure does my nut either way.

Isn't it all hypothetical though...if and when things are discovered there will be bonfires of Dr Who and Star Trek dvds. ...

It was just nice to see the whole country convulsed by the deaths of a very old comedian and a relatively young physicist. Two men who were about as far apart in their careers as two people can get; and yet both of them attracted the respect and affection of the general public. Amazing!

RIP Stephen Hawking.

BTW, from the Posts on this Thread, it's obvious that many people on the Forum are interested in some of the theories that surrounded Stephen Hawking's work, so I recommend that all married men study the "Theory of Schrödinger's Cat".

It is immensely useful as a diversionary tactic whenever SWMBO accuses you of a serious crime. e.g. "Have you been sleeping with your Secretary?" reply "Well, that question is a bit like that posed by Schröedinger's Cat." The accused can then launch into an explanation as to who Schröedinger was and an explanation of what the "Schröedinger's Cat" theory is all about.

At the end of the lecture, if she hasn't fallen asleep, SWMBO can carry on and open the lid; but by this time she can quite often not wish to have a definitive answer!

Enjoy! :thumb:
