Sooo it seems my early question has stirred-up a 'hornets nest' and prompted lots of technical replies which go right-over my untrained (electrically) head. Picking the wheat from the chaff, it sounds like I should use two different sockets with my two kettle elements to initially bring the sparge water up to around the required temperature, then switch off one element and plug the second into the STC-1000 and set it to the required temperature to maintain it. Does that sound right? I do have extra sockets nearby so it's not a problem. Thanks again.

If using a thermowell , piece of blanked off copper pipe soldered to a tank filling ? , could I not just pop one of those basic NTC sender down it and insulate the wire from the heat, just leaving the tip proud.

Bit confused S, tip proud, do you mean passing the ntc sensor through a hole in the blank cap into the pot, then soldering it water tight....would work :wha: Thinking aloud, to get efficient heat transfer the copper pipe would need to be of similar diameter to the NTC probe if the sensor was inside the pipe.

Some nice stuff there V, some small stainless tube, had in mind a bottle filler one day.

Anyway, my thermowell, what I had in mind was a blanked off tube, of some kind, a dose of heat transfer paste down the end, then the NTC probe pushed down, with a short length of heat insulation over the wires to protect them before they exit the tube.?

It'd be easy enough to make your own ss ntc sensors with stainless chopsticks as the enclosure :whistle: ..saw it done a while back.

Thanks for that V. It sounded a goer to me. Thats a good idea about the chop sticks, if we had some in the kitchen drawer it would be a damned good use for them, no good for eating. :lol:

As Darc said a good link will be going there. Looks like I need to brush up on silver soldering stainess for probes and bottle filler project.

I had better get back to Mrs. S. bathroom refurbishment to show progress, or I won't live long enough to get back to brewing projects. (Can't see anything wrong with the bathroom, works fine,...........except for a sight drip from the shower, which an O ring would have solved.

My temp controller gets used in the HLT, Mash tun, FV control and kegerator... a very useful bit of kit. If I hadn't already started building a 3rd i would prob get one from the forum sponsors!

They are all in these plastic tub things but when the cellar build get done they are going to find a new home in a single large enclosure that controls all FV & Kegerator action! Also go a PID somewhere for the HLT.. Hmmm :hmm:

Also now note you can buy the empty case with glands ready cut from Cedaronics for the temperature controllers!? Not bad eh!

thinking of getting one of these LCD Temperature Controller Thermostats are they any good?

Can I add my bit to this that others might have overlooked in regard to the double plug/elements bit.

If I have read correctly, you have 2 plugs wired through a single SSR?
So, each positive wire from each plug is screwed to the same terminal of the SSR?
That practice used to be common in s tage lighting in the '70's and '80's, the cable was called a widow maker, because when one plug was plugged in, the pins on the other plug had full voltage across them. I never thought I would hear of one being used today.

If I have read this right, then that is absolute bloody madness, and you should be reported, home user or not.
