I often see things like "a 1 litre starter". Does that mean 1 litre of pure yeast? I don't think so??

I assume it means 1 litre of wort with yeast suspended throughout it.

Is that correct??

Hi - sorry I should have been more specific.......

I know all about starters and making them, etc. What I was asking is when I use Beersmith it suggests an optimal starter size. 1.6L or whatever. What I want to know is what that volume is made up of? Is it 1.6l of pure yeast made into a starter or is it 1.6l of wort with yeast suspended in it?

If it's neither, what is it?

its 1.6 litres of wort or spraymalt with yeast suspended in it. We usually use 300g spraymalt dissolved in pre boiled water then add the yeast vial when at the right temp that size will brew 25l

I made a starter using 100g spray malt some yeast nutritioner then a sachet of SO4 in 1.5l or water then split it into 2 23L brews its happily bubbling away today after 12 hours in the wort
