Hi guys, i am about to knock up a Muntons Pilsner larger and i thought i would try using spray dried malt instead of sugar. The guy at the home brew shop said that he would use a mix of Spray dried malt and Glucose powder, do you think that's a good idea?

Could any one tell me what amounts of Spray malt and Glucose i need for a 5 gallon brew.

Thanks.

The mix of spray malt and glucose will give your beer more body the mix is 50/50 500g spray malt and 500g glucose wilko's sell a bag of this called beerkit enhancer.

Thanks ni9e.

On the subject of the Wilkos beer enhancer, at £4.99 it was half as much as the Coopers australian lager kit I bought making the total bill £15. Does anyone know of a supplier of the separate ingredients that would work out cheaper?

Not that I consider £15 for 40 pints of lager expensive but I can get 1.5 kilos of normal sugar at our local poundland for 89p so £4.99 for 1kg of beer enhancer seems extravagent, will it really be that much better with beer enhancer?

Lazydog is right you can get spraymalt on its own from your local HBS or you can order it from the forum sponsers and mix it yourself with sugar but if you want to remove the tcp ish flavour then treat your water with half a crushed camden tablet it removes the chlorine etc from your water or you could use cheap supermarket bottled water ;)

I have started a Coopers Australian Lager tonight substituting the sugar with a bag of Wilkos Beer enhancer. Starting SG is only 1034, is this normal as other threads seem to suggest a starting point of 1040. What sort of Final SG should I be looking at?

have you checked the temp your hyrdometre is calibrated for there is a calc at the top of the page
Yes its a 20c hydrometer and the wort was 21c. I just wondered if this starting SG was low or not seeing as I am using beer enhancer instead of notmal sugar.

It is a little low. Sometimes the markings on FVs are as much as 10% out which could account for some of it.

Counted the water out before and the markings are spot on on my Vat. What do you suggest, add a bit of normal sugar or obtain some more beer enhancer or leave well alone?

Right, just took matters into my own hands, took a small amount of wort out, boiled it with 250g of white sugar into a syrup, cooled back to 20c and added to FV. SG now 1040 so should give the strength I require. I can't see 250g of white sugar harming the taste to much, but we will see! :D
