Hi

I am just about to start on liquid yeasts and going on to splitting and storing, for my first attempt I was planning on keeping it fairly simple though, using most to make a starter, and then keeping some back for my next brew.

Am I best to make up a starter with all of it and then split some, or can I just keep some back from the original yeast and store under sterilised water in the fridge? :hmm:

Cheers
Paul

Only done it twice.
I fermented out the starter, first in 1 litre of wort and then added a second litre to it after about 24 hours.
When it had finished, I put it in the fridge to allow it to settle out.
Decanted the beer from the top of the yeast and then split the slurry 4 ways in to sanitised containers and topped up with distilled water that had been boiled and cooled.

I then use the splits to make starters when I brew.

Hope that is of some help :D

I use one vial to ferment out 1 gallon of 1.040 wort. I then split this into 8-10 bottles. I then use 1 bottle (or split) to make a 1L starter and the rest go in the fridge. Makes one vial go a long way!

Cheers guys, I like the sound of those, I think I'll ferment one out and then split :thumb:

Saw a post on another forum about the price of dried yeasts going up.
If you can split a liquid yeast in to 4, 5 or 6 portions you are about at the same price as dried yeast when you consider what you may spend on DME to make up the starter wort.

I am going to start adding a little extra grain to my brews to generate a little extra wort that can be frozen until needed.

ATB :D
