Just wondered if using a herms system do you use the total volume required and have a thinner mash as no need to sparge or do you mash as normal 1 to 1.5l of water per kg of grain and than sparge at the end?

Thanks
Andy

I would always stick to a standard non-herms based sparging profile.
The purpose of the herms unit is to control the temperature of the mash at the desired level.

Altering the ratio of liquor to grist will change how the mash performs which will lead to a wort that will behave differently during fermentation.

I've never tried it but have thought along the lines of doing a full volume brew with a HERMS as it's no different to using the Speidel BIAB system really.
I do use my HERMS to sparge, but I think I'm in the minority. Once the mash is over I divert the runnings from the tun to the boiler whilst pumping sparge water from the HLT through the HERMS pipework and into the mash tun. 2 reasons I do it this way, the HERMS HE ensures the sparge liquor is still at the right temp on entry to the mash tun and the sparge liquor cleans the HERMS pipework as it flows into the tun so no cleaning required afterwards

I am with v on this one my clean down routine isn't the best and this saves a job

+1 same here.
primary reason was to minimise pipework a use only one pump, accidental on my part was the ability to tweak the sparge water temperature from the HLT.
if I build a new system I'd do the same again.

Thanks,

what's the Speidel BIAB method?

Yeah that's the thing as my system be on one level and one pump, if I need to sparge it be more of a batch sparge rather than fly. Given the fact I'd be recirculating the main lenght then only run through a with batch sparge, would it give any clarity issues? Or would you need to as the recirculation should improve extraction anyway although I did read somewhere about you could reach sateration point whereby the mash liqure has absorbed as much of the sugar as is physically possible so you need to rinse through with clean water to pick up the remain sugar?

Thanks
