Sourcing grains..fair price?

Hi I'm just about to take the plunge into all grain brewing. I've looked on Hop and Grape website. How does 1.80 per kilo sound for pale malt?
They have postage 4.95 flat rate.
I'm planning 3 or 4 brews so I can buy in bulk.

Sounds very expensive. You can pay £18 for 25kg elsewhere compared yo 10kg for the same price from there.

I'm probably looking at around 20kg pale malt 1kg crystal malt. That's for 3 brews

You may as well buy a 25kg sack then. You can get base malt for about £19 from home brew company plus there's a forum discount

Geterbrewed and homebrew company..based in Ireland I think,do malt starting around £18 per 25kg...homebrew company sounds ok...free delivery if you spend £70 with a weight limit up to 31kg...so you could get your base malt, crystal etc hops (lots) and yeast.

I never buy £70 worth of ingredients. I just buy a sack of malt plus a few extra bits and pay the £6 postage. A sack lasts me months so I dont mind the postage costs, especially cause you can get a quid or so off with the forum discount

Been using HBC for a couple of years with zero problems. And their Hook Head pale malt is great, and ridiculously good value. I got a sack of Maris Otter last time just for a change, but it ain't as good and cost a third more. Sob!

This thread just persuaded me to give them a try. Needed a sack of pale malt anyway, as finished my Maris Otter off finally recently... So, including shipping, for less than the price of a sack of Maris Otter (before even adding the price of shipping) I got a sack of Hook Head pale, 1k pale chocolate malt, 500g chocolate wheat malt and 2k oat husks (found that husks seriously help with the flow when re-circulating).

Can't complain really, so long as it doesn't go walkies between there and here (assuming they use Parcel Farce like GEB do...). Only con is the need to store 25kg of crushed malt all in one bag, as usually I get it bagged up in 5kg lots by Maltmiller, but the extra cost is hard to justify when it's THAT much extra.... I wasn't a huge fan of the flavour of Maris Otter anyway, seriously overrated malt imho. I found I could get a much nicer flavour profile using Dingemans Pilsen malt, Crisp crystal malt and a nice bit of Munich malt (amounts depending on the colour I want). Dingemans is a bit expensive to keep using like that though....

Oh and yeah, £1.30 off thanks to the discount code too. I'm currently a happy brewer.:hat:

TLDR; Maris Otter is overrated imho.

Last few orders I have switched to HBC not for the discount but I seem to have less issues and can get what I want

Ach, oh well never mind, I'll know for next time... Will just have to store it in an air tight bucket for now, maybe throw in a hand warmer or something between brews.
