SO I bottled an American pale ale /ipa whatever you want to call it a grapefruit hoppy one anyway on friday night

All fine, tastes delicious

I left them bottles in the cardborad boxes , but went to move them this evening and my second box was a little bit wet in one corner..thought thats weird

checking the bottles they all look fine and really clear, except one which was missing about an inch or so, the beer came down just below the shoulder..the bottle felt dry at the top and shown no signs of leaking around the bottom..I tipped it upside down to see if any would come out the cap and it didn't.

I cannot really understand how a little bit of beer has somehow managed to escape one bottle..

although only 2 days bottoled I decided to open it which is my record for earliest since I leave at least a week but since it was obvioulsy a faulty one..

Tastes good though if a little flat (and cloudy because i up ended it!)
 
In a word, pressure. If it was dry and there were no leaks when you checked it I would expect that the pressure of fermenting for carbonating caused a leak. Once the pressure had been relieved the weight of the beer alone when you upended it was not as great as the pressure so none came out. The relieved pressure is also why it was flat. Maybe you put a little extra sugar in that one or it was capped quite as well as the others. If it was an infection I would still expect some signs of fizz (like a gusher) so think its most likely the cap not being on quite right.

Doesnt seem like a mystery to me, just basic physics that should be fairly well known by home brewers.
