I have seen people using these with temp controllers. Can anyone enlighten me as to their use?

I have a TC-10 on my bottle fridge. This happily sits at 13C with a heater and cooler and without a SSR. Should I be using one?

I am looking into a temp controller for the HLT, possibly a ATC-800+ to control a 2.4kw element. Would I need a SSR for this? Is this the best controller to use?

What controller would be best if I decide to go for a 3kw element?

A SSR is what it says a sold state relay . . basically a dirty great Triac with some control circuitry, They are optically coupled so when it gets a signal (usually 0-10V at 40mA) from the Temp Controller, An LED lights up and this allows the triac to pass the mains current from the other side. . . AS it is an optical switch it can switch several times a second which would rapidly wear out a mechanical switch

No, the TC-10 is equipped with two high power mechanical relays and switches mains voltage anyway.

NOT an ATC800+!! which while it can handle the current is only a fancy electronic thermostat . . . on or off. Ideally you need to use a PID controller with an SSR to control your HLT
