So who's growing chillies this year?

I made a lovely hot & sweet salsa yesterday to go with a pack of cool Doritos. Recipe based on something I found on allrecipes.com:

1 x mango, diced
1x chilli (or more, your choice :) ), finely chopped.
1x spring onion, chopped.
A small handful of fresh coriander, chopped
Juice of half an average sized lemon

Put the whole lot in a bowl and mix it up. Makes enough for a large sharing bag of Doritos. I think it must have lasted less than 30 minutes between a few of us last night.
 
Coming thick and fast now. Getting little harvests like this on a regular basis and the freezer is filling up nicely

I picked a couple of very thin red ones today to go in the curry...they are nicely hot
I thought my funny shaped Tri lobed chillies were aji fatalle which are yellow ..I think...but they've turned red!
I'll pick some next week and have a taster..
 
My babies products for this year! The plants are super chillies. Really great producer (finger length pods) and with some nice heat. Seeds were planted quite late in March. The others are ghost chillies and chocolate scorpians. Both super hots from plants that are in their third season and have been overwintered in the house each year. I find that over wintering gives them a much better start to the year and they start producing flowers and chillies earlier in the year. Thus increasing the chillies growing season dramatically.

I couldn't handle super-hot myself. I'm a bit ham-fisted when it comes to adding them to recipes so I need the extra leeway that a milder chilli gives you. Anyway here's one of my don't-know-what-it-is bunches:

We ended up with 70 or so from the 5 plants.
 
My favourite's a no bake lime cheese cake, ginger nut biscuit base with a mango, honey and ghost chilli sauce drizzled on top

In the past I've grown Scotch bonnets and Trinidad scorpions. Common sense has now taken over and I grow Peruvian lemon chillis. By contrast, these a mild and add a little heat and flavour to my Jalfrezi or Madras curries.

Everything's a bit late this year. I doubt whether the flowers in the pic will get to fruition. For bonus points, can anyone guess what leaves are maturing on the shelves (background) :)

Not being a misery...is it legal to grow??

I wondered this last night when I read the thread but it was too late to look into it, looks like it is legal to grow it but illegal to smoke it unless you pay tax so like distilling without a licence best not discussed.


Is it legal to grow my own tobacco ?
In many countries you can grow unlimited supplies for your own consumption tax free. In the UK, HM Customs & Excise are reviewing our duty on home grown tobacco. There is no duty of tobacco seeds, tobacco plants, or curing tobacco. Duty will only become payable when the tobacco leaves have been shredded or manufactured into cigarettes. HM Customs & Excise have said they will not be actively looking for home growers and when they have devised a means of collecting taxes from home growers, they will be reliant on home growers to declare that they have manufactured their tobacco. Given that 20% of all tobacco smoked in the UK is smuggled in from abroad, HM Customs could be in for a long wait. Please tell us if it is legal to grow tobacco in your country - we need world information for our new site at www.FreeSmoking.co.uk.
