Hi there I'm in love with wilkos velvet stout. I'm thinking of splitting the 5 gallons into 1 gallon DJs and adding certain things that would affect the taste.

What can I add to the stout to give it different textures and tastes? Also if you do reply could you say whether it's a fermentable and non fermentable?
I haven't gone down the extract brewing street yet because I can't afford the setup just yet and I want to experiment. I've used muscovado and vanilla sugar so far.
Thanks.

 Ive done a Stout with a tin of treacle - Nice and Sharp. Ive done a Stout with a bottle of Golden Syrup - Nice and Sweet. Both were great in their own way.

I dont think you can go wrong in chucking some additional flavoured feremntables (like above) in addition to the normal amount of DME or Brewing Sugar.. :thumb:

Elderberries or the juice of makes an excellent stout. Use the juice of 500g per gallon added at the start of fermentation.

You could use blackcurrants or blackberries. The elders add a vinocity similar to drinking port and Guinness, a velvet pussy.

When my Dad used to make beer back in the 80s, he once made a batch of lager with sarsaparilla extract added.. He always said that was his favourite brew that he'd ever made..

You shouldn't have any problems finding some elderflower trees or bushes, just go to your local park or to any bit of wasteland and you'll probably find some, even at the back of car parks where there are hedges. Remember to leave some of the flowers on though as then you can return late august / september to harvest some berries to put in your winter brews!

Never heard of elderflowers in a stout, they're usually used in lighter drinks, let us know how it turns out!!

I've used maple syrup, black treacle and muscovado sugar so far.
I'm going to see if i can get some lactose and make a milk stout (any help advice would be great).
Also like the cherry and vanilla ideas.
