Smilies ban? What's garn on??

Smilies are an important part of the forum experience if they are not used then readers can finder it harder to determine how to take your comments, this can cause tension and arguments as I well know.

But if limiting the number to 5 leads to a better experience for us all then surely that is a small price to pay

The recent changes to fight spammers have introduced a minimum post length for first posts to try and prevent spammers posting innane comments to get their post count up. A clever spammer could outwit this by using only a small amount of text and lots of smilies. Limiting the number of smilies should help to prevent that.

The changes have already helped to significantly reduce the workload of the moderators meaning that they can spend more time on the forum answering posts and moderating rather than chasing the never ending attacks.

Once we have a feeling for how the changes are working, we may well be able to increase the limit on smilies without letting spammers through :thumb:

I thought this thread was posted in good humoured spirit I didn't realise folks were getting so uptight about a little thing like smilies. Try and use words in their place !
Bid Nanny state/Big Brother indeed....never heard of anything so ridiculous.
Folks would moan if no improvements were made to an already excellent site and " funny posters " were allowed free range.

I apologise gentlemen, it does read a bit harsh in the cold light of day.
Had I used "smilies" it would have shown it to be tongue in cheek, but as they are now frowned upon I declined their use.

I have know idea what BB was refering to, retirees don't get promotion!

But it's not ideal because if ever those images were changed (i.e. we recently considered altering the smilies) then any posts you have made with the fixed links might start looking odd (missing pictures) - currently the board parses the smilies code and inserts the appropriate image but that parsing not work if doing your "sneaky" way

If we really wanted to be "Big Brother" as we have been accused, we'd simply set the limit of links to 5 and that would scupper you :lol:

I don't have a problem with a limit....can't say I go around counting them on everyone posts, I'm more up for what that person has to say. Having said that I do enjoy sticking one or two in...
