Finally had my first taste of my first homemade Edme irish stout brew kit today :drink: :drink: ... The OG was 1043 and the FG is 1005 so it is at a good 5% volume ...so alot better than my regular guinness

Superb taste... BUT.... Horrible smell, as being only 17 i havent had much experience of brewed alcohol, tastes and smells e.c.t. and feel slightly put off by the smell coming from the stout.... but parents say it smells fine to them....

Is it common for it to be an over exaggerated smell of stout in comparison to my regular Guinness preferences ? Or am i just expecting the stout to be too similar to the Guinness drink that i prefer ? :wha:

Also is there any way of reducing the smell on my next brew ?

All advice will be much appriciated

Thanks

The Guinness that you normally drink will be served much colder than the beer you are drinking now (I assume) the chill sort of numbs some of the flavours and aromas.

Thats why cr@ppy lagers can taste OK to some people, because they are served so cold you cant taste how bad they are.

The smell is something new to you Padawan

Smell is massive component of the experience & is a huge influence on your actual taste.

The stuff you drink in pubs is lacking both the above, stick with it you will learn to like stinky tasty stuff soon, and err away from neutral tasting crap stout in the pub.

How long has your Edme stout been bottled or barreled?

In my opinion it needs keeping for at least 3 months, preferably longer, it will soften and the flavours will improve.

I've got a couple of friends who are regular Guinness drinkers and they actually preferred my Edme to their black stuff. Ok, I know mine was bottle conditioned and theirs at that time was canned, which gave me an advantage.

Assuming that you are UK based, I thought the last pub Guinness I bought lacked body and didn't actually taste of anything much. If you should ever get over to Ireland you will find it's a totally different product, although I preferred the Murphy's.

i have done a couple of edme stouts,
and they were very tasty,
a lot of people who also tried them, commented on how it reminded them of drinks from years ago,

ive just short brewed one, with unrefined brown sugar, and im trying to ignore its calling....
15 litres just finished its conditioning......

looking forward to it at xmas.....had a taste and it tastes strong
fantastic value for a one tin kit,
