hI my fermentation bucket smells - only used the thing twice. Is it normal or will it effect my next brew??

cheers

There is you problem then mate. Once you have used it, give it a good clean with boiling water. Then before you use it again, wash it out again and sanitise it then rince.

simmerstats are pants I wasted money on one years ago. you can one pot brew but simmerstats? no.

get a plaggy 10gal boiler and a cheap cool box follow the posts on making such and save a pot of cash.

Don't forget the cheap kettle elements :thumb:

Yes Neil, that looks good . im sure a couple of people on here use those.
But to be totaly honest with you, you can make you own for a fraction of the price.
A cheep cool box from Asda - £7
A 10 galon Bucket from FleeBay - £20 or there abouts
2 x cheepo kettles - £14 or there abouts
Various taps and copper pipe - £30 or there abouts
Burco Boiler(for use as a HLT) - £30 from fleebay

Cheers, im not that confident with the DIY! but will take a look at that option

single or twin element????

cheers

If i was you i would go for the twin 2kw element boiler. If you are going to make your own.
But if you decide to get a Burco, they are usualy 3kw single element, all you will need to do is bypass the thermostat and it will work a treat.

and whats a HLT???? :wha:

HLT (Hot Liquor Tank) - used for heating water used for mashing and sparging.

twin element on a 10 gallon brew but they can't come from the same spur (double socket) or you will get burning smells and trips switching, a single spur cannot take 4kw that would pulling more than 16amps

I accidentally (*stupidly*) plugged 2 Backer 2.75kw elements into a double extension while testing my new HLT. The other half picked up the extension to get it out of their way and asked 'is this meant to be hot'! Got unplugged VERY quickly. Was drawing 22 amps through a single socket + extension lead.

Anyway, you live and learn. I now have 2 heavy duty 13 amp extension leads.
