What malt do you tend to use for SMaSH beers?

I'm going to do one soonish (see the Otter Brewery thread...) and I always just assume Marris Otter...

...do you just use your standard base malt or have you branched out and used something different? If so what was your thinking behind it and what sort of results did you get?

Just did what was more or less a smash with lager malt (I realise i've talked about it a bit lately, so sorry for that! lol.) The hue is very, very light and malt flavour is very little, so it's all hop. could be fun for a real fruity hop. A lot of these mega IPA types use a 50/50 mix of Maris and Lager for a half-ale-half-lager malt flavour, makes for a very easy drinking beer. i think they do that with punk IPA. i'd probably still consider that a smash with a mix of both, lager malt is just pale malt kilned super light, so a combination of the two is somewhat like kilning halfway between maris and lager. we have to do what we can as home brewers

white wheat would be fun too, but i think with a wheat yeast, you're just bridging on wheat beer anyway then.

That's the trouble with the smash I think.

I've done a smath (single malt and triple hop) and it is stunning if you like hops! The MO just carries the hops and lets them shine.

But on the flipside, isn't that the point of a smash? To show off the hops?

I would recommend trying Dingemans pale ale malt , more malty in flavour , i use in many/most of mine ,lovely.
I'm not into lots of hops as many here seem to be , i'm more into the difference of yeast and grains and mashing .

Hi,

I used pale malt for my first (and only) SMaSH brew and fuggles hops. It didn't ferment out completely (only to 2.6 % FG=1.020).

I could taste the malt quite easily and it it did taste amazing.
