Hi All,

I am planning on brewing a Single hop beer trying out the Simcoe hop (Bought 100g recently). My last single hop brew using Amarillo was superb!

I am going to be using 3kg of light liquid malt and looking for it to be in the low to mid 4%.

I have been searching for the web for a hop schedule for the boil but can only find them for the high percentage APA's etc...

Can anyone recommend one?

Thanks

Personally I would hop it somewhere between 35 and 40 IBU, with roughly half of the bitterness from a 90 or 60 minute addition. Another half of the IBU value at 20 mins for flavour and then another addition at 1 minute or a steep after flame out if you want some aroma coming through :D
Do you have any brewing software such as BeerSmith or Promash to help you with your calculations??

I used this hop schedule for a 19l brew length

18g @ 60 mins, 10g @ 10mins, 10g @ 5 mins

Turned out great but it needed a lot more aroma hops. I'd do 20g @ 5 mins and 20g @ 0 mins.
Good hop though!

Thanks for your replies.

I have BrewMate downloaded so I will have a play around with the figures you have recommended.
Looking forward to this brew :D

From recommendations made here, I've been using Magnum for bittering in my last 3 beers. It's pretty good and gives quite a smooth flavor that doesn't need to much ageing.

I had an alechemy simcoe burst that was lovely.

I emailed the brewer to let him know how much I enjoyed it and he gave me some advice on recreating it as an extract brew.

' Hey Barry,

Glad you enjoyed the beer!

Its not a single hop beer, but the hop in question is the overall flavour and aroma and hence the dominant character. We bittered that one with Chinook, which is actually quite similar to simcoe, so you could make it a true single hop if you wanted to!

Hop additions etc are dependant on kit and length, so I will give you relative measurements which you can apply yo your brew. We bitter to 65 IBU and add 2xthe weight of the bittering hop at 5 mins from the end, and then dry hop with twice that amount again. i.e. if you bitter with 50g hops, it would be 100g at 5 mins and then 200g dry hop

good luck with the brew!

cheers

James'

I took that to be that I would use magnum and a five minute addition to 65 ibu then double up as described.

Still to make it but it is definitely on my list!

I have bottled my simcoe ale today, malt bill was marris otter and 150g of wheat as far as I can remember.
the hop schedule for a 60 min boil was 30g at 60, 20g at 20 and 50g at 5 min i think. had a wee taste when bottling and its superb. hood hop flavour and bitterness, wee bit more bitter than I was expecting but it's still a smashing beer.

Sounds like a great bit of advice, this one is now on the 'to do' list!

If you get round to doing this one soon Barry, let us know how it turns out :thumb:
