Hawkshead Brewery had two beers in the final of the Campaign for Real Aleââ¬â¢s Champion Beer of Britain competition, at Londonââ¬â¢s Olympia last night and both won medals.
NZPA (New Zealand Pale Ale) took silver and Hawkshead Bitter bronze, in their categories.
ââ¬ÅWith more than 1500 breweries in the country now, the odds of getting to the final are long, to get a medal is the icing on the cake, to get two medals is a triumph for our brilliant brewing team, who are at the top of their gameââ¬Â said brewery owner Alex Brodie, ââ¬Åwhat Iââ¬â¢m most happy about is the consistent high level they achieveââ¬Â.
Hawkshead have had beers in the final every year for the past 6 years ââ¬Åitââ¬â¢s one thing to brew a cracking beer once, the trick is to do it all the timeââ¬Â said Brodie.
To reach the finals, beers go through several rounds over the course of a year; theyââ¬â¢re judged at local tasting panels and regional heats before the final judging at the Great British Beer Festival.
Bitter 3.7% is the beer that built the brewery, first brewed in 2002. NZPA 6%, created by Head Brewer Matt Clarke, is a highly hopped pale ale brewed with four New Zealand hop varieties.
