@neilb Nice i never played a 5 string but always wanted one. Metalman looks fantastic, never played one of those either, wish mine was 24 frets. Someone set my bass up and wringed the screws in the saddle so i cant adjust the action. Wondering if this is a common problem? No idea why they are all like that.

I thought the neck on the 5 string would be too fat for me but it wasn't too bad and got I used to it very quickly. I would take the plunge and go for a 5 string if you get the opportunity, that B string is fantastic!
Not sure to be honest, I preferred high action on my bass guitars as it suited my playing style. Both these basses came with fairly high action so I didn't need to change anything.

But then I prefer low action on my normal guitars and have set each one of them up nicely

"Standard" 8 string tuning is F#BEADGBE but I usually have it half a step down. I have had it in dropped D# tuning but it's hard to get a tight tone from it that low.

Never bought a guitar but i have made quite a few, Cigar box & biscuit tin jobs, actually i lost count now, think i must have a disease.

One on the left is the first one i built & still my favorite, Pitch pine neck that came out of Benfleet creek 45 years ago, Honduras mahogany fretboard from a Barclays bank counter top. Cigar boxes came from the Ritz casino in London where they used to give boxes away to the high rollers, A friend who worked there used to save the boxes & bring them home, He gave me a sackful of them. No 2 is 28" scale fretless, No 3 a two string chugger & last one a Kiwi tin diddlybo all came out of a skip.
All have rod piezo pickups with pre amps.

Bit of fun doing this one, Pole dancer round bodied 3 stringer!

I'll put some pics up over the weekend when I'm off work but currently I have a White Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro, a Epihone Les Paul Special II, a Fake Chinese Gibson Les Paul Standard (I've has that set up and and new parts put on it so it plays well now), a buttercream Fender Player Strat, A Squire Strat and a £77 Fender type Precision Bass which has an action as high as anything. I bought the bass and the Squire to learn how to do a set up myself.

Life under lockdown has seen a surge in amateur musicians and podcasters, says the UK's biggest online retailer of instruments and sound equipment.

In the April-to-June period, Gear4music saw the value of UK sales rise 80% on the same time last year to £21.2m.

Among the big sellers were electric and acoustic guitar starter bundles, which contain all the accessories required for a budding player to get picking.

Digital pianos also sold particularly well, said chief executive Andrew Wass.

"People are interested in having a really good hobby that they can get into," he told the BBC.

"Maybe they played music at school and have found themselves indoors and decided to come back to it."

Mr Wass said home studio equipment, including microphones and recording software, was popular as well.

"It seems everybody wants to be a podcaster and they're buying into really professional set-ups at home," he added.

I bought an audio interface to record with as well at the start of lockdown. I got a Yamaha MOXF6 keyboard a year ago so I'm all set - just needed a break from work which starts tomorrow!

This is the Chinese Gibson copy - it's even got a fake serial number on the back of the headstock. It's had a dust since this photo was taken. The switch works but needs to be replaced. I had a full set up done on it including a new bridge and nut. If I replace the pickups at any point it won't sound much different to a real one I would bet. It plays really nicely now. By far the heaviest guitar I have. If I decide on fixing the switch I will get new pickups and pots put in - I am not planning on learning soldering and a local luthier is fantastic and cheap.

This arrived yesterday for £77.99 brand new so you can only guess at the electrics inside it. The action is stupidly high I have ordered an allen key set and plan to lower it myself I have already reduced a bit of buzz by adjusting the truss rod. I bought this as I needed a cheap one to record with and to learn how to do setups and for the money I am very pleased with it. That headstock is crying out for a Fender Precision decal for a bit of fun. I've not played bass for over 20 years and my fingers are bruising already. The neck is untreated and it feels really good and smooth.

This one was a present to myself for giving up smoking at the start of lockdown. I couldn't justify the price of a USA model at my level and read amazing reviews of these new Player Mexican models - am chuffed to bits with this thing it might well be left unmodded. Was £549 new I think. The neck feels really nice to me. I just need to learn to play the thing better now.

Last photo - this is the alpine Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro. This is around 18 months old - it arrived with a broken switch but it still worked so I got them to send me a free hard case and I'll get it repaired myself when I get around to it. I got the white one because I was a massive Manics fan when they came out. This also has coil tapping so you can get a lot of sounds out of it. I am learning and playing some songs that are tuned down half a note so I leave this one set up like that for those that's the main reason I have two main guitars it's far less hassle. The Chinese copy above was an opportunity to mess around with a guitar and learn about them. My two other guitars - one I gave to my son that is collecting dust and the other one lives under the stairs in case I get an idea downstairs one night.

What interface did you get? I just upgraded my very old Line 6 pod for a Focusrite Scarlett which I love.

That was on my list but when I was ordering they weren't in stock. I didn't want to spend loads as I'd never used one before but I am very glad I have one now there is a massive difference using one instead of the pc audio card. I ended up with this

Everything seems to have gone up in price I am guessing from lockdown as the post above suggests. Mine was around 85 I think. It does everything I need. I had to order a little adapter for the back output so it can play back through my pc speakers which is plenty loud enough. I'd had 5 or 6 songs in my head for about 25 years so I wanted to at least get them done. Not sure I am brave enough to write and sing vocals though.

I've got a Laney amp for my keyboard (the idea of reforming our old band has been destroyed by lockdown - perhaps for good all interest seems to have gone) and I have wahwah and distortion peddles so got one of these to use as well Robot Check

It seems to do a great job for the price - the arm and clamp etc are quite poor though but I can ignore that.

I usually play using Guitar Rig V through the pc (not good for wah wah that's why I have the peddle) and I use Reaper with that to record - am watching tutorials right now. Everything works - I just need to get it done now I finally have about 10 days off work. And make some home brew of course.
