Hi guys.
i put on a few brews about 11 days ago. 2 of which were a pilsner from wilco and a coopers european lager. After 5 days they were a similar colour and all was well. I decided to "dry hop" the coopers with saaz hops.
ive never done this before and am now concerned. I weighed out 20g of the leaf hops from vaccumed packet, threw them in and gave them a stir. However now on day 11 my coopers brew is very very dark fo a lager!
Is this due to the hops or have i infected my brew some how?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thx with anticepation.
chris.

I don't know about yours but what I do know is I dry hopped my coopers Australian pale ale last week and it turned it into vinegar which I've just chucked down the sink.
I'm sat here thoroughly fed up that I didn't just leave the hops out.

Have you smelt it? Does it still smell like beer or vinegar?

Smells eggy still from the lager yeast. Its still bubbling away but im sure it shouldnt be this colour.
It looks the same as a brewferm kit i done which was infected. :(
Im gonna have to have a lil swig i think. See how it tastes. In future ill be using pellets for hoping.

The taste test will tell you if it's fine or not.
I'll be using festival kits in future I think, they have everything you need in the kit, so no need to experiment.

Which festival kits have you done?
Ive had the golden stagg and its my favourite kit to date. So much so that ive got another fermenting at the moment just to the right of my original pic is another fv with that in.
ive also got a razorback waiting to go in as soon as these have finished
heard lots of good things about the razoback so high hopes.
if its nearly as good as the stag ill be very happy.

I've only done a Pilgrims Hope which is very nice and I'm waiting for a father hooks to arrive any day now to get on with.
My friend introduced me to the festival kits, he had great success with the golden stag.
I've not read a bad review about them.

Okay. So ive now bottled all 3 kits. Had a taste test of each before doing so.
Im very happy to say all tasted good.
Altough i was concerned about the colour of the coopers against the colour of the wilko. At this early stage its much better. Still not as good as the stagg but lager has never got as much flavour as an ale.
Time to put the razorback on.

Is this actually true? I don't like lager so I've never really drunk it. I thought that because lager is served at a colder temp than ale you simply don't get as much flavour coming through and perhaps if you were to serve it warmer (at an ale temp for e.g.) you'd get more flavour. When my ales first come out the fridge there's definately not as much flavour as when the've warmed up a bit

Either your drinking lager straight from the fridge or you're drinking the wrong lagers:) They do contain pretty much the same ingredients, it's like saying cheese and onion crisps always have more flavour than salt and vinegar. I don't believe it's more or less flavour, just different ones. A lot of it may come down to personal preference, but a lager straight off the shelf tastes way different than one straight out of the fridge

I completely agree. Serving temp plays a big part. I never understood the big deal that gets made of "extra cold" beers in pubs. All it does in numb your palate past the point you can actually taste anything.

It's so they can make them with cheap ingredients, then chill it so much that you can't tell, then try and charge 20p extra for something 'special'! The only thing 'special' are the 'needs' of the punters who fall for it!!!

I've heard more than one person say that lager doesn't have as much taste as ale. Lager is basically a pale ale cold conditioned with a different type of yeast. Not being a lager drinker the only things i could think of for people to say that it's not as tasty as ale is a) serving temp and b) lager yeast - beer gets a large part of it's taste from yeast so i wondered, as lager yeast and ale yeast are two different beasts, whether it some how imparted 'less' taste

Hi

I found all my brews (beer, wine, cider ) changed colour from start to finish.

The only real test is to taste it as people said.

What's the hydromiter reading at the moment.
