dilema ive got is wether to use some yeast ive had stored in fridge at 1deg c[took this off last brew i did which local brewer kindly gave me and really makes a difference to end product] for 4 weeks.Just opened it and its got a very slight sour smell, now what i want to know is could this have any harmful outcome to my brew, ive got a packet of nottingham as standby should i just use this instead.

I would think the yeast would be fine. The sour smell is probably just from a bit of CO2. However I would add that if you keep having doubts then don't use it - it not worth losing a batch of beer.

I have recently used yeast I got from a brewery that I had sitting on the fridge for about 3 months. It had a bit of a longer lag time but once it got going it was fine.

thanks dunfie, i finished brew this afternoon and ended up using nottingham ,like you mentioned it probably would have been ok but it seemed a tad too risky to ruin a mornings work
