I did mange to get some sort of accuracy (I think) after a while of trying to balance it all so the thing was away from the sides but it was a bit of a faff.

Yip. When I do use the skinny tube I put it upright and then keep flicking it and that eventually it won't rise or sink any more and that's always settled on 1.000 with water even if you keep flicking it.
