After a bit of advice

We recently bought a new house.

The house is on a large plot. Under some of the garden is a sewage pipe that run from neighbouring houses. Our waste meets this pipe at the bottom of the garden.

Am I right that our water provider (welsh water) own the part that comes from neighbouring properties.

I noticed today that the pipe from neighbouring properties is less than 2 inches below ground. Shouldn't this be a lot lower? Should welsh water being responsible for putting this lower into the ground?

If the pipe is anywhere but a public area (like a pavement or road) its probably not the utility companies responsability (or so they will probably claim). It sounds like its your neighbours responsibility or yours if its in your garden

Dont know how far down the pipe should be

Im deffo no an expert but have had several months of trying to sort out blocked drains for one of my clients and whose reponsibility it was

I think ownership rules changed a few years back or at least that what the document from welsh water said when provided by my solicitor. Has it comes on my land from another property then welsh water should own it.

Will be contacting them tomorrow to check but thought I would see if there was any experts or people with knowledge on here.

We have a shared sewer on our property, and I can confirm that the law did change and all shared sewers are the responsibility of the water companies, even when on private land. We have had ours unblocked for free many a time, and at one point Anglian water thought they might have to dig it up, but it was always their responsibility.

Thanks I will try welsh water. They may not be aware that they have adopted that pipe

As others have said, (as far as I was aware/told) it’s your responsibility until it reaches someone else’s property OR a juction. However, if you are still in your guarantee period with the builder the utilities company may not have adopted the full responsibility yet if the pipe has been put down by the builder.

The house was built 10 years ago and the pipe was there before that according to the paperwork from the searches
