Never been one to take much notice of sell buy dates, if it smells OK it must be OK however started drinking a brew I did about a month ago and its a bit disappointing, something just don't taste right. One of the ingredient was some amber malt, just looked at the label, sell buy March 2007  am I being to much of a tight ****. I have a few oldish bits and pieces and never had any problem as they are stored cool and dry but I`m pushing it at nearly 5 years.

I have some "older" malts and hops. In general with the malt if it is for colour only and a small qty (like 20g of black malt) then I ignore the BBE. Otherwise I will taste the malt and decide then. With the hops I go with the colour & smell of them. I am still using some hops from 2002! (Gold block type)

sell by dates are a European Union thing, and often utter nonsense :nono:

dry ingredients should keep a good long while, so long as they are stored and kept nice a dry :thumb:

Thats what I thought, I used amber in a lot of brews and always got a distinctive biscuity taste but not this time for some reason. Just made me think is there a limit. Never had a problem before even with bits of a similar age.
