i have a 5 gallon FV that does not seal, i get no bubbles through the airlock but the top is bowed. should i put some petrolium jelly around the rim to help seal ? i have one of those small rubber grommets holding the airlock and have sealed with silicone.
thanks for any advice. :)

Same thing here - some seal and some don't, even using the same make (Youngs).

It's good to watch progress on the airlock bubbling

Buckets are for short-term fermentation.

Lids are for keeping out flies and creepy-crawlies.

The head of CO2 should keep any germs out.

As Rparkera says, it's nice to watch airlocks bubbling, but I only have one gastight bucket with an airlock and I find it a right PITA when it blows all of the water out of the trap or squirts foam through it. I've just racked a brew out of that bucket, which somehow seems to have acquired a deep scratch on the inside, so it's about to become a potato planter and I won't miss it as an FV.

Of course, that's just my opinion and you are under no obligation to agree with it.
