Hi all,

New to the forum in terms of posting and new to Homebrew altogether. I have the first brew on the go and obviously (I suppose) made a couple of cock ups which I need a bit of advice on please. (Cant find the specific answers on any other threads, hence why i'm posting!)

Firstly...
I stupidly mixed my VWP according to the HOUSEHOLD ratio and not the Homebrew ratio so it was 3 TSP per gallon - I only realised after I looked online for the price and noticed it listed as 1-2 TSP per gallon. I at least double rinsed everything but did notice there was a vague scent of the sanitiser in the fermenting bin despite rinsing.

Secondly...
I took my hydrometer reading in the fermenting bin itself but completely forgot to sanitise the meter itself, I just took it straight out of the packaging and plopped it straight in!

Thirdly...
My Airlock has some froth & sediment that has worked its way into the bend - Should I take it out, sanitise and reinstall it? Or leave it as it is still working somewhat despite the sediment?

In conclusion...
What I'd like to know is will it be OK to leave, finish, bottle and drink the brew, or does the above mean Im best emptying it down the drain to avoid being poisoned?! Sanitising is my biggest worry which is probably why I messed up on these issues, my gut tells me it will be fine but always best to check with the experts as its quite a daunting task and process for a newcomer!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Jared

you should be fine at that dilution providing you rinsed.

this stuff happens. i've dropped allsorts in my FV before, dog drinking wort, forgot to sanitize stuff, it's all practice. do you think 400 years ago they had our sanitizing chemicals?

hopefully you won't get infected, they're not really anywhere near as common as you think and usually come from bad ingredients. get your sanitizer ready for your airlock and just wash it off, dunk it in, rinse it well and put it back in the 'ole. it's already pretty much sanitary in there so don't panic.

never ever throw something away until it's 100% ruined beyond all questionable repair

Exactly what Rob says, don't worry, or panic. You will know when you need to though a brew away, ..............as a last resort. :) Its a heart breaking experiance, I lost 10 gallons once.

"Dogs drinking wort" :hmm: thats not happened here, only because the brew bench is high up, but they do tuck into the mash tun grain if its left for a second at dog height.

You'll be fine, as above.
I remember when I did my first brew and I was like "****, I dint wash my hands after I picked up that and towel"
And as long as you rinse out thorough you won't get any of favours.

I also caught my dog licking the bottles after I'd filled them but before I'd capped them, I learnt my lesson, now I always pour him a bowl full of the stuff before I start bottling ! :drink:

Have once had cat jump on FV (which was covered with a tea Towel) . . . getting a considerable surprise as he disappeared into the wort . . . . Made one hell of a mess running around the worktop it was trying to get to . . . sticky wort everywhere.

Still pitched the yeast . . . .

Beer had a bit of a 'catty' note

Thanks for all your replies!!!! Like I said my gut feeling was I was being a bit too tetchy about it all but you've put my mind at rest!

Luckily I havent got a dog but I have had to stop myself putting my gob under and opening the tap!

Ta again
