i recently liberated some of my dad's old HB gear that hadn't been used in over a decade. i think he only did three or four kits with it. it was a bit mucky so i gave it all a good wipe down internally and externally, a soak to the brim with some thin bleach and water, and multiple water rinses. i didn't scrub at all as i don't want any scratches for bugs to lurk in. my question is, would you risk using an old plastic FV/bucket in these circumstances? is it still an infection risk? i plan to also Star San everything on brew day.

I can unfortunalely think of only one way to find out . . .

Take all the precautions that you can, take the plunge, put them yeasties to work and get some :drink: going on.

I have done the exact same and not seen any adverse effects. I cleaned them with hot soapy water first using a washing up brush to get into the corners etc and then used Youngs steriliser. Worked up a treat :-)

my first brew was in an fv that was left in my garage from one of my previous tenants... dont know which one, so it could have been anything up to 6 yrs old.... all worked fine, i just washed and sterilised, then a good rinse....

Yup, I use my dad's 20-yr old FV as a bottling bucket. I did fill it with a bleach solution for a week beforehand, which removed any staining and made sure anything that was alive on it was definitely dead afterwards!

thanks all - i think i'll risk it. it's clean enough that i'd be prepared to let my kids drink out of it and not worry, so i can probably risk some beer in there.
