Hi

I've just bottled my first extract American IPA and was now reading up on my next effort and thinking of steeping with speciality grains and in particular i wanted Rye in there.

I found the below recipe where Rye is included in the steeping grains but I have also read that Rye should not be steeped.

I've seen some recommendations on doing a partial mash with Rye Malt and 2 Row Pale Malt and the other grains. Does this sound right ? And if so I guess you would need to reduce the amount of DME ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Batch 5 Gallons
5lb DME Light

Steeping :-

0.25lbs American - Carapils
0.50lbs American - Caramel 40L
0.25lbs American - Victory
0.50lbs American - Rye

I have used the rye grain I have a mill just for rye, but in future I will be using rye flakes in the mash, the grain is a difficult grain to work with and is a grain which needs to go into the mash.
Better to take Mr Rooks advice if you can get the lme. Or just not bother with it.

Hi @BrucetheFish

I don't know where you've found that recipe, but it looks to me like the author meant that last steeping grain to read "Crystal Rye" which is a version of Rye grain that can be steeped, and in that amount will give you enough of the spicy rye impression in the finished beer that you could probably refer to it as a Rye Pale Ale :?:

Cheers, PhilB

Cheers all for the advice. I think I'm going to give partial mash a go with a little bit of rye malt thrown in and see how it goes.

I made a rye IPA with it that turned out great.

I have made a few myself. I struggled to get the spicy taste described. It added a great mouth feel to the beer. I used 1kg in 20 litres

I saw somewhere that the idea that Rye is spicy comes from the taste of Rye bread which has other things in it that makes it Spicy - therefore Rye itseld isnt spicey when used in its natural form. Will soon see as I am making a rye beer shortly.

I added caraway seeds to an all-grain rye porter that I brewed several years ago.

Rye has a distinctive flavour in bread and in beer (they sell freshly-baked loaves of rye bread in Lidl if you want to taste it- they're the really heavy ones) but it's not at all what I'd call spicey. The Bavarians make Roggenbier, which contains loads of rye. It's well worth trying.

There's a Rye Stout I've been drinking called Blood Revenge. I know, I know but the brewer is into Black Metal hence the brewery name.

Its a fantastic beer though.

Just googled this one and it looks amazing.
They don't give much away though : Brews
and "Behold Thy Drink" is a bit naff.
But these boys like it:

Now I wonder how I can get hold of a drop. I'm sure that if I can taste it I can brew it.
