Well I was handed a bottle of this from a friend at work who said "you like beer don't you?"...well he is not wrong... :)

So tonight I've had this in the fridge since I got back from work and not long opened it...

On the eyes:

Very dark ale, but held up to the light you can just start to see through. Nice compact head which lasts right to the end of the glass.

On the nose:

The smell gives away the alcohol content of this beer (which is 8.5%) and it has very strong port aroma which is very pleasing. It reminds me of open fires and Christmas dinner.

On the tongue:

On the first hit you get a lovely bubbly sensation from the carbonation which dissipates into a warming nutty flavour with a huge blast of more port. Very pleasant and beautifully balanced to the bitterness of the hops which creeps through right at the end. Just marvellous!

On the brain:

At 8.5% this is a very strong ale and after only a 330ml bottle you can definitely feel it! I can't imagine being able to drink too many of these (without being completely mashed) however if I was more prepared I would have loved to have a selection of cheese and biscuits to enjoy this with. I reckon this would have went amazingly with some strong Stilton and oatcakes :)

Overall I can see why this won "World's best ale" in 2009, an amazingly complex flavour which leaves you wanting more after each sip. Well done Robinsons, you done good on this one :thumb:

A great beer, the embossed bottles are nice but the label is a b&@)d to get off. T

:thumb: Love it.

Wonder how long it needs to mature... might still be enough time to get a batch brewed for Christmas.

Well that sounds good.
I've just bottled a 23 litre brew of this beer never having tasted it in the past.
The smell of alcohol was quite overpowering during the bottling session, the beer tasted sweet but it will be ageing and maturing till Christmas so hopefully it will round off.
Unfortunately I had a major problem when bottling..............

After my son suffered for several weeks 70 odd empty Budweiser bottles were collected and intended to be used. For some reason I couldn't get a crown cap to fit any of them. After a frustrating time I gave up with them after 20 odd bottles.

Old Tom had to be bottled in ordinary glass 500ml beer bottles.

If the brew is successful, care will have to be taken on drinking.....

I've only ever dunk it on tap. Lovely pint (or 4), I want to do one but the maturation length puts me off. Might do a 1 Gal batch and then it only needs 8 pint bottles to keep.

Mind you this will be the first time I have ever done a 1 gal batch :D I usually go upscale not downscale.
I might do one around xmas for an October drink.

Well this is all very strange.
I have always thought Old Tom was most aptly named. I tried it many years ago and thought it tasted of cat pee. I then bought one to torment a friend with last year and tried some in case it or I had changed. Nope. Cat wee beer.
I like dark ales. I like strong ales. I like strong, dark ales. I just don't like this one. I did wonder why so many people were going crazy for cloning this stuff.
Maybe it's something to do with what you can and can't smell and taste or something. I "detect" asparagus after eating it. I also can't use artificial sweeteners as most of them taste horribly bitter.

I guess so. I'll keep giving it a try very now and then. You never know, maybe it's an acquired taste? Maybe if I made some myself it would be different... perhaps that's the route to take...
