random and hopefully simple question, how do you get an airlock and bung out of a DJ without sucking sterilization solution into your wine?

I've tried everything, as soon as I slowly remove either the bung+bubbler, or just he bubbler from the bung, the pressure difference until the seal has broken sucks sterile solution into me wine. Should I just use Vodka instead, so its no issue if some drops in?

I'm gradually replacing these horrid S shaped things anyway as they are too long to fit in me airing cupboard shelf but I have half a dozen or so Id rather not bin just yet

I just twidle them back and forth until the seal is opened and air rushes in. Overfilling the lock with liquid is the real problem, if the total liquid is less than the 3 bubbles on one side then you'll be ok, if more then may suck contents into your fv.

Thing is these are the best for wines, I dislike the round ones as they often come off and dryout.

I used to use the old type but now use the wilko handy airlocks which are quieter they also allow me to put my FV's om the kitchen counter below the cupboards, the other type are too tall.-

When i used the type below i only filled the bottom bubble -

Thanks chaps, looks like I'm over filling!

It's the lower cup type ones pictured that I'm using mainly now as they are lower and much easier to remove

I never put sterilising fluid in an airlock, just plain water and make sure the cap is on. Never had a problem with a batch going off so always done it that way.

This is what I do, only I use boiled and cooled water from my kettle, not had a problem yet......

I'd never thought of that actually..

The Mrs always has a bottle of Vodka on the go, but doesnt really drink it so Im considering that too (and not putting as much in)

Only use Star San in airlock but, 1. Hate the stubby two part ones, 2. Prefer the S shape as they look the part :) and I fill so that the bottom two bubbles are filled only equally when level and 3. The only time I have had one suck back is when using on a large fv in the lid and that was caused by lifting the fv when the lid was snapped tightly on with the lock in place.

I use miltons fluid if i have it in the sink having sterilised everything before starting, if not i use tap water straight from the tap, as others have said i have not had a problem.

The reason i said the two part ones were (for me) better than the old type bubble ones is they allow me to put my FV's on the kitchen counter below the cupboards, the bubble ones are too tall.

The exact same reason for me gradually changing,, airing cupboard shelves!

Chippy tea "quieter"? Sacrilege!
My Mrs was doing her nut last week or so, there were 9X5 gal fv,s outside our bedroom door going full blast. Personally I love hearing them, it stops me fretting about them not working.

I have my experimental sake next to my bed :)

I've heard of "low maintenance wives" but if your missus doesn't drink it what does she do; just stare at it?

Haha she just doesn't really drink! The odd one, maybe a vodka and ginger beer once a week. Or sherry, which is lovely but she ruins it with lemonade!!!
