Hi Guys,

Ive recently done a couple of kit IPAs but would like to get more involved in brewing and moving away from the kits. Can anyone recommend / link me to a good recipe suitable for beginners?

I am a complete novice when it comes to non-kit based brewing so a nice easy step by step guide would be good.

I like a good strongish (e.g 5%) pale ale if possible.

For all grain, you will need a boiler and mash tun at least. For extract you will not need the mash tun but will need a boiler.

You can make these yourself if you're good at DIY or buy them for I guess around £150-£200. Best thing to do is read some equipment threads and have a nose around the recipes section. Also look at other people's brewdays to see whats involved.

I do all grain, it takes more time but the product is the best.
 
heres a recipe for you when you have bought all the gear you need to make it

I'm currently drinking this and it's lovely,pale and very hoppy,I'm impressed by the Nelson Sauvin recipeview.php?recipe_id=1265.I'm currently brewing extract beers,and I'm going all grain after Christmas.I'd say the main outlay for extract beers is a large pot for boiling the wort.This would do as a starter http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAND-NEW-BUC ... 2568be867b and no I have no connection with the vendor.You could use it until you decide to move on up to a proper boiler,and possibly a mash tun.

i might actually have a go at Sara Carter's Bombay IPA. So if i got the stockpot type pan I would just ratio down the grams of hops accordingly? As that would only make about 15 litres?

That's right just adjust the hops pro rata the brew length, good luck with it
 
Or stick to the recipe, same malt & hops, make a more concentrated wort in your stock pot & then dilute it back by adding more water in the fermentation vessel to end up with the full 25litres.

Just realised that the recipe in that link was all grain, for an extract version replace the marris otter with 4.5kg pale liquid extract & steep the vienna malt in a grain bag at 70C for 30mins.
 
great stuff, so if I follow that recipe for the IPA Comparison Brew (Sara Carter Bombay IPA Jaipur Clone) I presume (if i had a 5 litre pot (just to make things simple) i would...

fill up to 25 litres of water and bring to the boil then add the ingredients listed first (under 75 mins) then after 30 mins add more of the same ingredients (listed under 45 mins) then after 15 mins (30 mins steep @ 100C) do I add more ingredients and take it off the boil?

Also, at what point do I add the malts? and do i need to prime my bottles like i do with the kits?

sorry for silly questions just need to be 100% clear!

The above recipes are based on all grain, ie mashing the grain, sparging and then boiling the wort with the hops (there's plenty of advice on here about the process and the kit you need)

What SP was saying that if you don't have a big enough boiler to make 25L, then you could still use the recipe to make a concentrated wort, ie 15L at a very high gravity, and then dilute this in your fermenting bucket to the 25L as per the recipe (this is called liquoring back). Sparge also told you how to do the brew with extract and partial mash. In both cases you would then boil the wort with the hops as per the recipe adding hops at 75mins and 45mins. The steeping takes place after the boil time has finished at 0mins (at "flame out") you then steep the hops for the alloted time.

After fermentation is complete you bottle or keg in the normal way, and include priming.

Don't worry about the silly questions, but there is a lot of information here that will inform you. The the John Palmer book is also a good source.
