I watched a programme on TV the other day - Industrial Revelations: Beer and Bread.
Very interesting, the history of IPA etc. So I picked up some Green King IPA to give it a try, and really liked it.

I wondered what you folks would recommend, I've been looking at:

St Peter's IPA
Coopers Brewmaster IPA + tin of malt
Muntons Gold IPA
Milestones IPA
Or even a Hamstead 'Design a Brew' hybrid extract

Any advice welcomed

I also got a bottle of St Peter's Best Bitter - just to try, I couldn't find a bottle of their IPA

Greene King IPA is nothing like a real historical IPA. . . . It's pretty much Canoe Sex Beer (*) and to duplicate it I would suggest

1.5kg of extra light unhopped spray malt . . . make up to 23 Litres with cold water . . . Take a packet of hops . . . don't open them but wave them in the general direction of the fermenter (careful don't want any possibility of it actually getting any hop taste . . . . it might be best to do this in another room away from the FV), then ferment at 20C using Nottingham or another bland tasteless neutral yeast.

Try Marstons Old Empire for a hint at what a Real IPA should taste like.

Unfortunately IPA has become a marketing term rather than a beer style . . .

Hahaha, now that made me laugh for real, I like your sense of humour.

Interesting on the Greene King opinion, I was limited in choice at Asda - however I notice that Asda sell the Marstons Old Empire, so I will try that ~ are any of the kits I mentioned close to the Old Empire (I am sure I'll like it)?

I'm still a bit of a newbie in terms of beer brewing to attempt an AG (still figuring out what I'd need anyhow - I am currently reading "How to Brew" by John Palmer. :thumb:

Brupak's IPA, brewed short and dry hopped, makes for an expensive beer but is amazingly nice.

I used similar hops to punk ipa, and it tastes vaguely similar to it.

I can only comment on the St. Peter's as it's the only beer I've done so far. I brewed it a little short to get it to 5.5%. Have to say, it's real easy and rather nice. How close to a propper IPA it is though, is not very.
The only real problem I have with it is that it appears to evaporate...

I can recommend the Milestones IPA - it's what I'm drinking at the moment. Not particularly 'pale', but pretty hoppy and as I'd bottled it, it's getting better with age (week 5 after bottling now). I'd warn that the advertised 4.7% is optimistic; I'd reckon I'm more at the 3.8% mark and that was after leaving it far longer than was suggested.

So does it fall into the true definition of an IPA? No, probably not, but it's still a pretty decent beer.

Cheers!
